Looks like Symantec have no remedy:

If it does no harm... o.k.... otherwise: format C: :-(

(I didn't consult Dr Google in depth;-)

Mcafee says you should delete any file which contains this virus. If
mstask32.exe is an important system file, I could find no reference to it on
microsoft.com. The only references I found to it on a general web search
were all related to virus or trojan. I say nuke that puppy. -Dave

mstask is a .dll on my XP, around 245k. If you need this file, get another
copy from someone else.

You need to use Dos and know the path in which the infected file is located.
A:/erase X:/yurDir/thefolder/mstask32.exe

RIGHT-click the file, choose properties, uncheck "read only". Then boot to
SAFE mode and try to delete that file again. -Dave

Thanks Dave . I did do that and norton did find a virus and delete it

Ghost it so I can do a quick restore if I have any more problems .

Hey Flipper,,,, I got the same one on the 4th when I opened
the 'Janet Jackson short post' ... which went into the
PREFETCH folder.
The 'mstask32.exe" went into theC:\windows\system32...folder
& I eliminated it by transferring it to a "temp" folder
[which I think was allowed] & then deleted it. If not I
booted into other HDDr and deleted it from there. It
wouldn't allow the ordinary delete while in use.. I had
WINPATROL running when it wanted to load in my Startup.
