Virus attacks

I'm sure that most viruses are proliferated by idiots who open suspicious
attachments to e-mails. In my whole history of computing, I've experienced
only about six viruses, all of which have all been picked up by my virus
checker, currently AVG. If only spam was as easy to eradicate.

a virus or a worm.

Six is six too many. You are depending on your virus checker. That's
not a good idea. One day it will let you down.
If only spam was as easy to eradicate.

It is. You just need the right approach.

How many viruses one needs brag about to qualify as an "idiot?"

I did a fresh install of 2003 server a few weeks ago and forgot to
setup the firewall before plugging in the cable modem, Bang 3 viruses
appeared, I had put the modem on to download the patches but the
viruses beat me to it.
So even an experienced computer tech can get caught out with a moments
lack of forethought.

Good. One down and how many to go?

And of course, the spammer will claim 'freedom of speech' and/or 'freedom
of the press', and so the case will drag on...

You forgot to mention 'infringement of the spammer's human rights'....

Ah!!! But that will not work because spammers are not human...
Spammers are a blight, an infestation, and a plague of which humanity
has every right to kill off and send back to the sewer from whence
they were spawned.

It's a sad situation that you have to use up precious system resources just
to run virus checkers, ad blockers, firewalls etc.. just to go on the net
:(
Here's another worrying thing. I recently re-installed my XP partition and
was on the net for an hour before I got my virus checker installed. In that
short time I was infected by a virus that crippled the system and resisted
every attempt at removal! I only have windows installed for gaming and
usually only go on the net to download update patches or new airplanes for
my FS2004. I think that policy may change from now on! It seems that even 1
second unprotected on the net for a windows machine is like playing Russian
Roulette.
So, in a nutshell, it's not just idiots who click email attachments who get
nailed by virii and worms ;) Look at what happened to me, I use Linux
(which is pretty much immune to virii) for all my email and 99% of web
surfing and still got my windows installation infected.
It just plain sucks.

Big difference between someone putting whatever in a public forum, and
trying to shove it into your private space. Amazing that so few can
grasp that concept.
Personally I have nothing against any sort of malware being discussed or
exchanged amongst willing participants in an open forum, and would
likewise enjoy that same open forum used to post a URL to the video of a
spammer being run through a bush chipper.

The solution is as simple as that: Surf with Linux, as a user with non-
administrative rights. Download your patches to a directory which
writeable, non executable.

Then boot Windows and get the downloaded patches from said directory,
install them. If they are genuine, this method should be as safe as
possible. Oh yes, don't forget to get the new kernel, though, as the
earlier 2.4 versions are vulnerable to a certain attack - see the
Debian.org incident two weeks ago.

Ah, another MS pop. MS attracts more viruses not because it bad but because
it's big. If you wanted to write a virus, and you could write one for MacOS7
or Windows, you'd chose Windows because it would have a bigger effect.

There are plenty of viruses out there that target Linux, and as the user
base grows so will their prevelance. Linux is not 'virus safe' it's a time
bomb waiting to happen.

True, but the hassle involved in getting the root (admin) rights on the
system to do some real damage stops many from bothering. When I say Linux
is "Virus Safe", I mean that there are few virii out there and the user
would have to be pretty stupid to get infected in the 1st place ;)

As *nix becomes more popular/prevalent, getting admin won't be much
harder than it is now to get some doze happyclicker to let you in. <g>
