Hi !

excuse me for asking a question about virtual pc here but I asked in the
virtual pc newsgroup and nobody can answer me.

I'd like to test my image using virtual pc first but I have a problem. My
virtual pc image do not boot ! I also simply tried to format in ntfs and
then copy the 3 files : ntdetect, ntldr and boot.ini but nothing happens !!

I need some help ...
thanks

Hi Mike

I too had this same problem, i used Diskpart on WinPE to partition and
format the virtual drive then copied the
XPe files over but nothing happened just empty black screen. KM told me to
use dos to partiton and format but i
don't have floppy drive on my labtop so i then got told to get dos boot
cdrom which i haven't got hold of so am still
stuck. Anyway using the WinPE tools should work, it does on a real hard
disk. So maybe there is a problem with
Virtual PC , i would have thought someone would have noticed this by now.

Regards

hi ms,

I already tried to use dos to partition and format but after I did not use
convert tool to convert my filesystem to ntsf, instead I have format another
once using win pe. But nothing happened, just empty black screen as you
said.

I tried to install an XP Pro system and it works !! now I can copy my xpe
files but I have another error during copy : Invalid handle !

so for the moment I stop works on virtual pc and further, I see the network
copy is very slow, so I have no advantage to use virtual pc to test my
images for the moment :(

Mike,
hi ms,

Did you run bootprep then?
convert tool to convert my filesystem to ntsf, instead I have format another
once using win pe. But nothing happened, just empty black screen as you said.

I tried to install an XP Pro system and it works !!

If you got that far you are now close to make it bootable with XPe.
now I can copy my xpe
files but I have another error during copy : Invalid handle !

Can you give us more info on where exactly you saw the message?
Did you just copy the XPe files to another partition?
What partition setup you've got there?
etc.

hi KM !

I had an error during file copy (my virtual disk was on a shared folder
which has been disconnected during copy ...oops) Maybe the message "handle
is invalid" came from this. I will try another time and give you more
informations later ....

thanks

hi KM !

I retried to create a virtual disk (dynamically expanding), then format it
using dos fdisk & format, then bootprep, and then another ntfs format. After
this I copy the 3 files ntldr... change attributes to SHR and it works !!

my disk is bootable without having to install an xp pro first.

but now when I try to copy my xp embedded image files, I have the following
error : "the handle is invalid".
I use net.exe to map a network drive and then copy all folders and files
using xcopy .... /q/e/r/y/h.

I hope you know where this error come from.
thanks

Mike,

What OS you execute the xcopy under?
Does the error happen in the middle of the copying process? I mean are you able to copy any file over?

Hi,

I use the xcopy under win pe boot cd rom.

The error happen during the windows folder copy with images of 250 MB. My
virtual disk is fixed to a maximum size of 500MB.
I tried to make a little xpe image of 24MB to test and I can copy all of its
files. Strange :(

thanks
Mike
