Can anyone tell me if there is a way to use Virtual PC with XP Home
addition? GusGus

Yes, Vmware Player or server should work.. Some advice, if your on a
broadband connection - make sure that you firewall the OS on your Virtual
PC, and then use Shields Up! to insure your first 1025 ports report as
"steathed" in the host computer - as well as in your Virtual Pc.

I was running Linux Ubuntu 7.04 in a virtual machine, and I couldn't figure
out why TCP ports 902 - ideafarm-chat, and 912 - Apex mesh - were stuck open
in Windows XP Pro. I wound up uninstalling Vmware, only to figure out
afterward - that all that was needed was to use a firewall in Linux.
Thankfully, I opted to keep my vmare settings in the registry, during
uninstall... I'm reinstalling it on Monday.

Hi Ron
Thanks for the quick responce! This is the the specs for the Virtual PC.
Notice it says XP Pro. I tried downloading it awhile back and I got the
message it wasn't compatible with my operating system. I was just wondering
if there was away aroun this.

Thanks C.J. for all of your info!
I think I may be getting in over my head with all of this. My computer is
working pretty well right now, so maybe I should leave things well enough
alone!!!

What OS are you thinking about running in Virtual PC? Its not that complex
to set up.

It works here on MCE Home Edition download it and give it a shot.

Ron, there's no such version. WinXP Media Center Edition is a
_superset_ (iow, it does _everything_ WinXP Pro can do (except join a
domain), plus contains additional multi-media features) of WinXP Pro.

Ron, what do you mean by "MCE Home Edition"? There is no edition with
that name I know of. I assume you mean "MCE," "Media Center Edition"
(without the "Home" in it).

MCE is a superset of XP *Professional* not XP Home. It has everything
in Professional (with the single exception of the ability to join a
domain), plus its extra media-related features.

Hi Gus,

I noticed that but I did not check the specs when I downloaded it and I
currently have version VPC7 installed. I just fired up another PC with
plain XP Home and the download completed without problem. During
installation there was a notice about not having a supported system;
however, the installation completed without problem. What this means is if
you install it and have a problem, MS will not help you because Home is not
a supported system. Give it a shot, it is fun to play with. I have W98
loaded in my VPC so when I need to refer to W98 when giving directions, I do
not have to reboot.

Bruce and Ken,

I have no idea where I came up with that notion--may be one of those DUH
moments. To top it off, I can't find the invoice nor the XP CD for my
computer. Something must have lead me down that road--I am still looking.
I was having a very good day until you two commented <G>. If I can find
anything, I will post back. Until then, I have MCE edition :-)

I know those moments well! I have them much too often myself.

LOL! Sorry. ;-)

Well, so far I found an XP Pro CD that has been missing, an expired passport
and a couple of hard drives I didn't remember having. You two guys are now
officially on my list as I will have to clean my computer room just like my
wife has been saying for six months. Let me see, I expect I will be done
about next Wednesday <G>.

I know *that* problem, too. ;-)

I started cleaning my "room" four weeks ago. Got it all sorted, sent a lot
of burned out monitors to recycling. Now I just have to fit all this
"sorted" stuff into a small shed in the back yard.
