Virtual Memory

I recently installed a program for my job. The installation went fine, but
when I try to execute it, a pop-up labeled Director Player 5.0 says that
"This program requires at least 3MB of free virtual memory to run." and it
has an ok button that terminates the pop-up and the program. Can anybody
tell me how to resolve this, or at least where to start? How do I change the
minimum allowed paging file size? Right now, it is set at 2MB, so does
anybody think that may be the problem? Anyway, whatever help you guys can
offer would be great. Thanks a lot in advance.

2mb of virtual of memmory!!! HA HA HA!!! I'm sorry! OK, how much memmory do
you have??!

system memmory = virtual memory (Initial and Maximum values)
128mb (not rec. for XP)= 256mb
256 (not rec. for XP) = 384 mb
512 (minimal for xp) = 512mb or 768mb

I guess I deserve that for not putting a few basic system specs in my post.
I'll let that one slide. Anyway, here's what I'm working with:

Windows XP Home Edition Version 2002 with Service Pack 2
Pentium 4 2.80GHz
768 MB Ram
About 11 GB free space on a 24 GB HD

Is that enough info? Thanks for the help.

You probably need to increase the minimum paging file size to at least
50 mb or to change the settings to "system managed size".

Open Control Panel - System - Advanced and click on the Settings
button in the Performance (top) section.
Go to the Advanced tab and click on the Change button in the Virtual
Memory (bottom) section.
Select either the System Managed Size option or change the Initial
Size (= minimum) to at least 50 mb.
Click on the Set button (twice just to make sure) then click on Apply
and OK as needed to exit.

You may be prompted to reboot the computer in order to put the new
settings into effect.

Good luck

Sorry. I didn't meen to be mean! If you have 768mb of memmory, than you
should set your virtual memmory to NO MORE THAN 768mb, 512 is also OK!

Why do you say this?

You cannot possibly know the overall memory address space requirements
for this computer because the original posting did not include any
information about how the computer is being used, which applications
are being loaded, how many of them are active at any given time, how
large the data files are, etc etc etc.

Thanks for the advice. I tried it, set the paging file size to system
managed and it's still not working. Right now, I'm looking at the Virtual
Memory window that allows you to set the paging file size. In the top box,
labeled "Paging file size for selected drive", it shows C: selected and the
available space at 13792 MB. The button selected is "System managed size."
In the bottom box, labeled "Total paging file size for all drives", it says
the minimum allowed is 2MB, the recommended amount is 1149 MB, and the
currently allocated amount is 1149 MB. Maybe that info can help diagnose the
problem. Also, I tried re-installing the program, both before and after
changing the setting to a system managed size. (Before that, I had it set at
a custom size range of 1149 - 1500something.)

Thanks so much for any help.

The nature of your error message ("This program requires at least 3MB
of free virtual memory to run.") leads me to suspect that this is an
older program, probably written for Windows 95 or maybe even for
Windows 3.x.

If the program is a commercial product then please give us the name
and version number of the program and the name of the company that
produced it. There may be a work-around.

One thing to try would be to run the program in compatibility mode for
whichever versions of Windows the program was originally intended for.

Good luck

Ron,

The program isn't commercially available. It's a training program from one
of my suppliers. I'm not sure what OS it's meant to run on, but I'll
definitely find out and give it a try in compatibility mode. Thanks for the
help, and I'll let you know how it turns out.

Thanks.
