Hi.
Well, I fixed the kids computer, now its my turn.

I am running XP Pro SP3. Until last week no problems. All of a sudden when I
return to the computer after a while I get a warning message that VM had to
be increased. At that point Symantec Antivirus has shut down; I can't
disconnect my network connection; and I have to do a hard reboot.

I don't know where to start looking to resolve this problem. Any ideas?

Thanks.

You failed to mention all the information one would need to help...

How much Memory is installed
Hard disk size
Page file size
Is Windows managing the page file
How much memory is free
.... etc

Anti-Virus program often take up a lot of memory. Need answers...

What is the CPU and how much RAM does your computer have? Right click on
the My Computer icon on your Desktop and select Properties to get this
information.

Try Ctrl+Alt+Delete to select Task Manager and click the Performance
Tab. Under Commit Charge what is the Total, the Limit and the Peak?

Start in the usual places:

1. Be sure the computer is clean:
http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/page2.html#Removing_Malware

2. If the machine is virus/malware-free, look at Task Manager and/or the
free Process Monitor to see what is running and taking up your resources.

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/default.mspx

3. Manage your Startup to make sure extra programs/processes aren't running:

Start>Run>msconfig [enter]

This brings up the System Configuration Utility. Look on the Startup tab and
find the probable culprit. Uncheck the box next to its name, Apply and OK
out. You don't need to restart immediately, but the next time you do you'll
get a dialog saying you've used the Utility. Just tick the box that says in
effect, "don't bother me about this again".

Important - Do not use the System Configuration Utility to stop processes.
Instead, use Start>Run>services.msc [enter] and do not stop any services
unless you really, really know what you're doing.

How to Troubleshoot By Using the Msconfig Utility in Windows XP -

The free Autoruns program is very useful for managing your Startup -
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/default.mspx - Autoruns

4. If you have less than 512MB of RAM, increase the physical memory. You can
use Crucial's memory finder (www.crucial.com) to see what type you need.

Malke

perhaps if the system is
already set to automatic
mode for the v.m., because
it is the default option,

then you would have to
utilize the custom feature.

let us know if you need
more info on the above.

Do you leave the computer on 24/7?

You should be able to gather more information from Task Manager. With
the Processes tab open select View, Select, Columns and check the boxes
before Peak Memory Usage and Virtual Memory size. What are the figures
for the 6 processes using the largest amounts?

I would be interested in seeing a Disk Defragmenter report . Open Disk
Defragmenter and click on Analyse. Select View Report and click on Save
As and Save. Now find VolumeC.txt in your My Documents Folder and post a
copy. Do this before running Disk Defragmenter as it is more
informative.

When does the Norton subscription expire? What is the name of the Norton
product you have?
