Hi.
Well, I fixed the kids computer, now its my turn.
I am running XP Pro SP3. Until last week no problems. All of a sudden when
I return to the computer after a while I get a warning message that VM had
to be increased. At that point Symantec Antivirus has shut down; I can't
disconnect my network connection; and I have to do a hard reboot.
I don't know where to start looking to resolve this problem. Any ideas?
Start in the usual places:
1. Be sure the computer is clean:

2. If the machine is virus/malware-free, look at Task Manager and/or the
free Process Monitor to see what is running and taking up your resources.

3. Manage your Startup to make sure extra programs/processes aren't running:
Start>Run>msconfig [enter]
This brings up the System Configuration Utility. Look on the Startup tab and
find the probable culprit. Uncheck the box next to its name, Apply and OK
out. You don't need to restart immediately, but the next time you do you'll
get a dialog saying you've used the Utility. Just tick the box that says in
effect, "don't bother me about this again".
Important - Do not use the System Configuration Utility to stop processes.
Instead, use Start>Run>services.msc [enter] and do not stop any services
unless you really, really know what you're doing.

The free Autoruns program is very useful for managing your Startup -

4. If you have less than 512MB of RAM, increase the physical memory. You can
use Crucial's memory finder (
www.crucial.com) to see what type you need.
