Windows XP Home Edition contains primarily video files. But even when
nothing except IE is open, a little surfing will cause the Virtual Memory to
go to the long self adjustment procedure. This renders even IE useless until
the adjustment is made. (Several to many minutes.) Problem seems to have
intensified since networking to the WAN via ISDN, too. Ideas? Set a manual
page file memory size?

I never heard of this procedure. HOW are you managing your virtual memory?

Go to System Properties | Advanced | Performance Settings | Advanced. What
does it say under Virtual memory? Click Change. How are these options set?
Have you tried choosing System Managed Size?
