Virtual memory error message

Hi Mike

I must admit i dont know much about this error message im
not sure if its a bug in MS Antispy or unrelated to MS
but lets see if you can free up some space.

What size is your pagefile(virtual memory) ?

Right click "My Computer" - Properties - Advanced (tab) -
Settings (Button under Performance) - Advanced (tab) -
Virtual Memory - Or use control panel > then system

On mine i have 512mb or ram then for the virtual memory
the initial size is 768mb and the maximum size is 1536 mb

Have the initial size be at least 1.5 times bigger than
the amount of physical RAM.The maximum size is 3 times
your RAM (This should be the default anyway)

Example, if you have 256 MB of RAM, the minimum size
would be 384, the maximum size would be 1152.

Bill James MS MVP has a convenient tool, 'WinXP-
2K_Pagefile', for monitoring the actual usage of the Page
file, which can be downloaded here

http://billsway.com/notes_public/WinXP_Tweaks

**Note this is vbs scripting so you will have to allow
your antivirus software to run the script as most AV's
will block it. (Bill James is very well respected and the
AV warning's are just because its a VBS script)

Another way to find out is by using Task Manager
(control,alt & delete):

Open Task Manager and go to the Performance Tab.

Notice the Physical Memory section. Look at the Total
figures: example - 785904 K (that's the amount of
installed RAM).

How much RAM is available? example - 372924 K - more than
half of the installed RAM.

How much memory is your system committed to? Look at the
Commit Charge section, at the Total figures: example -
429604 K.

What was the largest amount of memory your system has
ever committed itself to since the last boot? Look at the
Peak figures: example - 453168 K. This means that you're
running close to your peak, and although your system has
peaked to around 450000 K, it's still far from using up
its RAM.

you can also see the current amount of memory used by
looking at the lower right corner of Task Manager, where
it says Commit Charge: 417M / 1250M.

Pagefile Fragmentation

If the pagefile gets fragmented your system's performance
will decrease. System Internals has 'PageDefrag', a free
utility that shows fragmentation in the pagefile and then
offers the option of defragmentation at boot time.

The utility can be downloaded from HERE

http://www.sysinternals.com/ntw2k/freeware/pagedefrag.shtm
l

Once you download just unzip the file and run
pagedfrg.exe.

It may sometimes happen that the system give 'out of
memory' messages on trying to load a program, or give a
message about Virtual memory space being low. Possible
causes of this are:

The setting for maximum size of the page file is too low,
or there is not enough disk space free to expand it to
that size.

The page file has become corrupt, possibly at a bad shut-
down. In the Virtual memory settings, set to have no page
file, exit, shut down the machine and reboot. Delete
PAGEFILE.SYS (on each drive if more than just C:), set
the page file up again and reboot to bring it into use.

The page file has been put on a different drive without
leaving a minimal amount on C:.

There is trouble with third party software. If it happens
at boot and the machine has an Intel chipset, the message
may be caused by an early version (before version 2.1) of
Intel's 'Application Accelerator'. Uninstall this and
then get an up-to-date version from Intel's site.

Other things you can do to free up space :

run the disk cleanup

goto start then run and type

cleanmgr

on the page that opens free up anything thats not needed
(temp files, recycle bin etc..) then goto to the second
page (More Options)

on the system restore part press clean up to remove all
the restore points except for your most recent one

Hope This Helps

Feedback

Good information here to users who have not 'experienced'
a heavily fragmented pagefile.

If you create/move/delete alot of large chunky files
(music/videos), over a period of time your pagefile
fragments more and more.

'Pagefile fragmentation' and an understanding of how the
Master File Table 'MFT' works is good 'maintenance'
knowledge to learn for 'basic' home users like myself.

I had a hell of a time with my PC suffering the Blue
Screen Of Death 'BSOD' due to virtual memory issues.

In closing it can take an application your running alot
longer to access and read files it needs if it has to
search through alot of fragments.

I agree that the information is good.

However, I haven't seen the original post which prompted the response. In
my experience, the situation in which Microsoft Antispyware triggers a
message about virtual memory is when it is attempting to scan an
object--registry entry or, perhaps, file, for which even the administrator
on the machine doesn't have permissions. Some spyware/virus code does this.

I'd view this as a bug in the product--it locks up and leaks memory until
you reboot.

No amount of tweaking will fix the basic issue which is a bug in Microsoft
Antispyware. The solution I'd recommend is to clean the detected threat
using a different product.

Cheers Bill

I was thinking it may be a bug in MSAS but ive not come
across this myself so thought id try explain what i can
and just hoped at the very least it would improve
performance ,Im glad you know its a bug though to save
him abit of time

I've noticed alot of my replies have been deleted off
here in the past few weeks at least 10 when i just
checked so im gonna make this my last post for awhile as
im wasting my time if MS are deleting my comments ,

All the best mate

Its been a pleasure using the forum

Please stick around?

Andy--I am 99.999% certain that what you are seeing are server-end
issues--the server is a cluster of multiple machines, and sometimes they
lose synch and messages are missing from one server or another.

I believe there has recently been a change to the servers, but am not
completely sure.

In any case, if you stick around, and notice this happening again, I can
bring it to the attention of folks who care and can fix the problem. I'm
not sure whether they'll be interested in older threads which show this
problem, but anything new in the last week would be something well worth
following up on, I believe.

Thanks Bill

I received a very kind email from Steve Wechsler [MVP]
which helped me understand things better and his view is
the same ,He believes the problem is because im using the
http: address and not a newsreader so maybe i was abit
quick to comment without trying other ways to access them.

I know there is about 10 posts that have been deleted
because if i visit

http://www.pcreview.co.uk/forums/forum-259.php

on topics where i made a comment the above site shows
other peoples views but mine are not there,This does only
apply to the messages that say unavailable on here so i
know they have been cleared for some reason .Sometimes i
express my opinion rather than facts so maybe my view
wasnt shared by MS on these occasions.

I fully respect MS's right to delete any views they do
not agree with as its their site so im not complaining
and after receiving Steves email i will carry on helping
out if i can and will just try to keep answers to the
point and not express to many of my own views to prevent
similar problems.Steve pointed out id made over 300 posts
so i cant complain too much if 10 have been deleted ;)

Thanks for the reply Bill

Andy

The newsserver admins are under considerable scrutiny, and I don't believe
they will ever remove a post just because it expresses an opinion or a view
which they, or Microsoft might disagree with. They are professionals, and
take this stuff very seriously. There are ways of looking into what is
happening with specific posts, so if you see this happen again --so the
issue is fresh, let me know right away. We could look at the older stuff
too, but as I say, I believe some things at the server end are changing.

I'm quite certain that this is a technical issue--among other things, I
don't know how the third-party forum you cited gets its information from
Microsoft--they only do feeds to certain higher level partners, although
anyone is free to pull in all the messages to their own newsreader. So the
link being missing from a third-party forum adds more possibilities to
where/what went wrong, I think.

Andy,

Thanks for your exhaustive reply. I have tried a few of
your suggestions and freed up some memory. I removed the
program and will attempt another download and subsequent
scan. I'm familiar with beta software and usually bugs go
with the territory (hence the term 'beta').

Mike

I have noticed exactly what you are talking about.
Whenever the AntiSpyware hits my WinTools registry key, it
throws up the virtual memory low message and freezes. I
have gone into the registry myself and encountered error
messages with WinTools. I'm not sure how to fix it
either, any advice? My computer at home is offline right
now because I am moving so I can't go downloading any
fixes yet, but any changes I can make to my system, please
let me know.

In general, my advice is to remove the problem with some other tool.

Often, I've found that Trend Micro's online scanner:

http://housecall.antivirus.com

can manage the job--it targets spyware as well as viruses and removes both.

Others here may know of better specific tools for your threat--I'm afraid I
don't have a more precise recommendation at the moment.
