Virtual Memory Consumed - Memory Leak?

G

Guest

I get notifications that windows is increasing the size of my virtual memory,
after it has been on for a while(a few hours). This happens even if just
turn it on and let it sit. I feel I have a memory leak. I loaded POSTGRES,
MySQL, and JAVA, and noticed the problems after that. I have since
uninstalled POSTGRES and MySQL (I never used them anyway). My system still
runs out of virtual memory. Do you think I need some kind of registry
cleaner? If so, which one? Any other suggestions?

No! I think that you need to increase the size of your allocated VM .

Thats not the solution. Useless suggestion. You may want to consider things
a bit more carefully before you reply to a newsgroup item.

===> That could be background tasks running causing that. Do you know how
to use Task Manager or any other method to determine what is running and
what may have been started later? Event Viewer is one plac you might get
such info - along with the time/date when things started. There are many
things that go on behind the scenes which are perfectly normal depending on
the application. It doesn't even had to be an MS application.
This could also be caused by malware or spyware. Are you protected for
them, and have you recently updated them? Of course, you've already scanned
for a virus?

I feel I have a memory leak.
===> Possible, but that cannot be determined with the data provided. XP is
pretty good at memory management, so an application would have to be the
cause if the machine is otherwise "clean".

===> That's also possible, but ... you didn't say you removed Java to see
if that was the cause. Did you? Did removal change anything?
What else have you done so far in troubleshooting this? Sometimes it's
as important as knowing the actual cause in troubleshooting this sort of
thing.

===> I really don't think it's a Registry issue, but again, that's a
possibility if it were corrupted. What makes you think it's a Registry
issue?

Have you tried using the Restore feature? Try restoring to a time previous
to when you put those three apps on your machine. If that doesn't have any
effect, you can always re-restore it back to what it was before the changes.

More details are needed.

Good luck,

You may want to consider learning about how newsgroups operate and
exist.

What are your current virtual memory settings? And also how much RAM
do you have in your computer?

Open Control Panel - System - Advanced and click on the Settings
button in the Performance (top) section. In the Performance Options
window go to the Advanced tab and then click on the Change button in
the Virtual Memory (bottom) section. Preferably this should be set to
"System Managed Size" unless you have some expertise and experience
with setting these values manually.

If a manual setting was entered please make note of the values for
both minimum and maximum and post them back here. Click on the System
Managed Size button to change to this option and then click on the Set
button (twice) to put the new options into effect. Then click on
Apply and OK as needed to exit. Reboot the computer to put the
changes into effect.

Good luck
