"views" within My Computer

Is there a way to set the "view" in My Computer for
contents always open as "details"?

Windows [XP] remembers 400 folder settings. When that number is reached some settings aren't retained any longer. You can change this to 8000 by adding this edit to the registry.

Yes, browse to a folder and open it up with the details
view in Explorer. Then goto tools->Folder Options->view
tab and choose the Apply to all folders button. Any
settings set here will be remembered for all explorer
sessions.
