Viewing excel files through Internet Explorer

Hi. I am building a website that produces reports in Excel
spreadsheets (tab delimited .xls files or comma delimited .csv files).
My page has links directly to these files. On some machines, when
the user clicks the link an Internet Explorer pages opens and displays
the spreadsheet. On other machines, I get a page cannot be displayed
message. All the machines in question have Excel installed. Any
ideas? Is there a specific plugin that some machines may have and
others don't?
