Viewing animated gif files with Vista

With Windows XP if you used explorer to browse files - .gif animated files
showed the animation in the viewing pane.

Vista just shows a still frame

Is there any way to set up Vista to view the animation.

Gif still seems to be a common file format for small animations like smilies
and signatures.

If it is now obsolete - what has taken its place that I can convert to...?

Hi,

Animation is viewed when the file is opened in the default program for them,
Internet Explorer. Animation does not occur when the file is previewed
(either in explorer or the picture and fax viewer).

You have discovered yet another feature commonly used in XP that is not
properly implemented in Vista. I use Irfanview and associate .gif files with
that. I wonder if the XP File/Fax viewer can be somehow used in Vista? IMHO
it is far better than the kludge that it has now become.Anyone know what the
actual executable is? HTH James

It's not an executable, it's the function of a library (.dll) file. Also,
the XP version cannot be used in Vista, precisely because it too is a
function of an older version of that library file.

Thanks Rick :) It's a pity. Myself and most of my users find the Vista
equivalent very unituitive and awkward compared to the XP viewer and it
won't work with some commonly used filetypes that worked perfectly before.
Hopefully MS will fix this broken functionality in a future SP.

James :)

Hi James,

No offense intended, but I kind of think this is a bit funny. I recall quite
vividly that when XP was released a lot of people complained about its
Picture and Fax Viewer being the default for most image types. Now people
are complaining when it isn't. Just a non-sequiter....

Personally, I don't mind using either of them, and for better manipulation
of image files I go straight to Irfanview.

I don't think the original poster is talking about viewing these images in microsoft picture and fax viewer. I think they are talking about viewing them within windows explorer, in slide show mode. I too miss going through my animated gifs and viewing them animated right there. I hardly thing this format is obsolete when almost every web page, including this one, has them embedded within the content.
