view problem in explorer

I seem to have done something in a setting that will not allow me to
automatically arrange icons in my folders. Normally when you "arrange Icons
by" in the dropdown menu, your choices are name, size, type, modified,
duration, demensions. Below those selections are, show in groups, auto
arrange and align to grid. These three are "greyed out on my system, and I
can't figure out how to un-grey them.
This condition prevents me from setting the folder contents to auto arrange
by name, my normal norm.

Any ideas out there???

Change the views and those options will be offered. To arrang by name,
change to Details View, click the "Name" header button.

To lock that in as a default view, click Tools, Folder Options, View
tab, "Apply to all folders" button.
