1. "view attachment" has locked-up my machine; as I can
best recall, the email was high-lited in blue and I think
I right-clicked and chose 'view attachment'.
2. Had to use control-alt-delete to regain control.
3. The pst file is unusable even after running:
3a. 'scanpst.exe' several times.
3b. 'chkdsk /f' several times.
3c. 'diskcleanup'.
3d. defragement.
4. I should report that prior to running 'scanpst.exe' the
first time, I saved the pst file to my external hard-drive
but, during that effort, the system twice reported error
problems; something about data being lost.
5. What else can I try to recover the pst file that I
really need?

I have answered my own question; it took all the below
plus reinstalling Office2000.
NEVER again will I use 'view attachment'.
Hours of lost time on this one problem.
