View an Image from the Desktop

Strangest thing. I can double click on an image in a folder to open
it in the 'preview' in Windows Photo Gallery, but if the image is on
the desktop and I try to double click on it, nothing happens. I get
the 'circle' waiting icon for a split second and nothing.

Anyone here have an idea how to diagnose this?

I had the same experience; no image file on the desktop would open in Photo
Gallery. If I drug it into a folder, it opened. But just as mysteriously,
the problem went away, after about a week. I don't know the cause,
unfortunately.
