Video Quality & DVD recording

I used a digital camcorder, downloaded the movie, edited it and saved as a movie. I tried using DV-AVI option, but it said I cant use that option because the file will become larger than the size allowed in Windows XP. I used a different format (cant remember what it was), transferred it into DVD and played in on my tv. The quality just sucks

What is the optimal video format, if I want to record the video in DVD and play in on tv? If DV-AVI is going to be huge what other option can I use?

To avoid the file size limitation in FAT32, you need to convert your hard
drive to NTFS file format. FAT32 has a 4gb file size limitation which is
only about 17 minutes of uncompressed video. DV-AVI files are about 12gb
per hour.
