Video-PPT-projector solution

Hello Group:

I'm no expert, but I see a lot of questions posted here about problems
projecting PPT with video clips.....clips play on the laptop, not on
the screen, etc. Some of the replies were not very specific.
I had a big problem with this recently, and I thought I'd post what
worked for me, in a step-by-step manner. I hope this may help some
people through this frustrating experience.
(I posted it also in the WMP group where I started my pleas for help,
but it's certainly not WMP specific, and may not even be PPT
specific.)
Best regards.

My system: ASI (Asus)laptop with ATI Mobility Radeon 9700, Windows XP
Pro/SP2, PPT 2003, 2GB RAM

Overview: A video clip within PPT (at least on my laptop system) can
be seen in only one of the screens: the monitor (projected image) or
the laptop display screen, whereas non-video images (powerpoint slides)
will be seen in both places. You therefore want the video to show up
in the projected image since you have to choose between the two.

Therefore you must set up the system with displays arranged for the
projector screen to be the primary and the laptop the "clone", at
least while you're giving the presentation. Then you want to return to
the original configuration.

You so not want to extend the laptop onto the projected screen, so
don't check "extend my windows desktop onto this monitor" if you click
on monitor #2. (The "extend" configuration combines the laptop and the
projector screens into one large space.)

Here's what worked for me, stepwise:
1. Right click desktop|properties|settings.
2. Click on the icon for the primary monitor (the secondary
should be greyed out).
3. Click advanced. This brings up the ATI Configuration Menu (You
won't get this if you try advanced under monitor #2, since it's
inactive and should stay that way.)
5. First click "troubleshooting" tab and turn down hardware
acceleration to about 40%.
5. Then click "Displays" tab.
6. You'll see images of "monitor" and "panel". Click the
"primary" button, which looks like a target, under the monitor. It's
hard to see, but you have selected it when the black line is at the
top left of the button, instead of the bottom right. click it once.
When you click the primary button under the monitor, the "clone"
button under the "Panel" image will automatically activate, and the
primary button inactivate. It's a subtle change and easily missed.
(Thanks, ATI!) Don't mess with the icons at top left of the images,
which activate/inactivate that device.
7. Select keep changes.
8. You should now see everything on the projector that's on the
laptop screen. Again, in my system film clips in PPT can be seen only
on the projector, but a mpg clip which is not a part of a PPT file
shows in both. This must have something to do with PPT, but at least
this works for your presentation..
9. Save this "scheme" (also under the "displays" tab) with a
name, such as "presentation" and then reverse the above configuration
measures between primary and clone and save this one as "normal". The
default hot key to switch between the two is ALT+F5.

One thing I should have added:
Just lowering the hardware acceleration enabled me to see video clips
on both the laptop and the projected image. So that ought to be the
first step for those with problems. If that doesn't do the trick, then
you'll have to choose to make the projector the primary display, as
outlined above.
