Video players using huge CPU power

Both my video players (WMP 9 and latest VLC) suddenly cannot play movies in full screen without severe frame skipping and freezing
yet when the screen is "original" or small, they play smoothly as they used to in full screen. I've swept my system for
virus/adware/etc to no avail. Is there something obvious I should be checking? Audio files play perfectly.

Maybe your system power is marginal. Virus scanner use
a lot of CPU time these days. Use msconfig.exe
(http://www.svrops.com/svrops/dwnldoth.htm) to turn off
your virus scanner, then try again. Remember to re-activate
it after the test!

System power is fine - since that hasn't changed since it used to work well. But you bring up an interesting point about the virus
scanner - of course that isn't the cause of this since it was operational before as well. I read that you can disable email
scanning without any danger since it gets scanned anyways some other way. Does this make sense? Its supposed to free up a lot of
resources. Especially in my situation checking several pop accounts every 3 minutes.
