Sounds like the shiny rail the printhead travels on is gunked up. All
the owner needs to do is wipe it down (may have to use a mild solvent
if the ink buildup is really bad and then lubricate with a synthetic
lubricant).

Not too uncommon, and easy to fix.

I'm in complete agreement with Larry. Thanks to your posting the sound the
diagnosis is rather trivial. The printhead travel bar has dried out and
wiping it with some 3-in-one oil will keep the head from binding.
However, having used a 600 myself for many years (and that was 8 or so years
ago) I wouldn't spend the effort using it anymore as the print quality on
it, even in comparison to a 5 year old Epson 880, is prehistoric.

Maybe, but how long does it take to wipe, plus you may have
some $ tied up in ink that it'd be nice to use up.

I prefer the noise Epson printers make when you stomp on them.

Had an epson stylus color II.

Very highly rated by the con artist computer magazines that people
bought sometimes before they had internet access.

Took 5 minutes of funny noises before it was ready to start. And that
was when operating normally.

Contrast the lump in my throat and blood on my hands when I
desperately needed something printed on that thing and it wouldn't
print. With the tears of happyness when I used an HP Deskjet 895cxi.

The HP sometimes ate 2 pages at a time, but it still worke[s/d]! It's
never "not printed".

I know 2 people that liked Epsons . They both said that they like it
because the quality of the colour was superior to HP. I guess they
were comparing the popular, most marketted printers .
