Video file being used by another person or program

I have a video clip that I want to move to another
drive. I get the error message that the file is
'being used by another person or program'

I assume that one of my video players is holding
it 'Hostage' for some reason. This happened once
before and I followed the instructions and was
able to delete that file.

However, I do not want to delete this file, I
simply want to get whatever program is 'using' it
to release it so that I may move it elsewhere.

Also, how can I determine which program is 'using'
this file and can I prevent this in the future?

I found an article that said to remove this
registry entry to prevent this problem:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\CLSID\{87D62D9
4-71B3-4b9a-9489-5FE6850DC73E}\InProcServer32]

However, there is no CLSID under Classes in my
registry.

I am running WinXP SP2 and use both VLC 0.8.5 and
Windows Media Player 9 (?)

TIA

It's probably something in your startup apps that's grabbing it. Was it the
last piece played or in the last playlist used?

You might try moving it from Safe Mode; often that will work.

I don't recall if it was in the last playlist, but
it may have been.

Unlocked can be useful here:
http://ccollomb.free.fr/unlocker/

Unlocker did it but... If I try to view the clip,
it immediately eats 100% of my CPU and then I have
to use Unlocker again after I close the file.

It appears to be explorer.exe that is the hang up.

It is a PITA, but I can live with it

Thanks for the pointer

Yes I thought it might be explorer. What kind of file is it, .avi?

Yes it is. This sort of thing has happened
before, but at that time I wanted to delete the
file that was hung. I believe that it was likely
an .avi also.
