Video editing software for a novice

D

Dr. Indera

hello,

i am looking for video editing software that doesn't require a phd to use,
even though i have one - LOL

i did some research and came across the following:

http://3d-album.com/

http://www.ulead.com/vs/runme.htm

i want to be able to take photos and put them in a digital photo album if
you will and add music to it and then copy it to cd's to watch on a tv or a
pc.
i want to be able to edit the mini movies i take and combine video clips -
like from a child's birthday party or a wedding.

according to the instruction book for the camera, it records video in mpeg4
format.
can this format be copied to a cd and viewed on a tv or pc? if not, what
format do i need to convert the video to?
hmmm, just had a thought - do i have to burn the video clips and photo
albums on dvd's?

my laptop came with nero express, which has video cd and super video cd
capabilities <not sure what that means though - smile>
does this package contain what i need to burn my videos to cd or do i need
to purchase nero 6 ultra edition?

if there are other photo/video editing software packages that you recommend,
please let me know.

thank you.

Have you tried Windows Movie Maker, that comes with Windows XP? It is a good
start for a novice, and you should be able to do pretty much everything you
need with it. You cannot burn CD and DVDs directly from it though. For that
you need software like Nero etc.

Other popular video editing software includes:

Adobe Premiere:

Pinnacle Studio:

escape me at the moment, sorry.

'scuse me but I don't see 'taking red eye out of a photo' as part of any
moviemaking/editing applications I have ever used. Think now about what you
really want to do and to what you want to do it to ;) and take another look
at Windows Movie Maker as a fine MOVIE MAKING application. Maybe you want

hi kgk,

i looked at your suggestions - adobe "seems" a bit more complicated and
expensive than i'd like <smile>

pinnacle studio 9 seems like it is something that i could learn. i also saw
it on sale, so i will probably buy it.

thank you.

hi graham,

i just read several reviews for studio 9 and visual studio from ulead. many
reviewers claim that studio 9 crashes, which doesn't make me happy. visual
studio got really good reviews. right now, i'm leaning towards visual
studio.

i spent a great deal of time on ulead.com - one of my concerns is whether or
not the software can change the brightness of video. over the weekend i took
a few clips. it looked fine in the viewer of the camera, but when i played
it back, it was quite dark. i'd like to be able to lighten it up.

thank you for your help.

I don't actually use Ulead for editing, only their better dvd authoring app,
dvd workshop 2. If you want some good advice on Ulead for editing, peraps
you'd like to use the simplydv forum, where we have a couple of members who
use it regularly and will let you know what you want. Pinnacle can be
temperamental, particularly if installed with other editing apps. They sell
loads of it though and most people do not have much trouble and it is so
easy to use. Ulead is possibly not as popular, possibly more stable, and
nearly as easy to use - certainly not difficult like the higher end apps
such as premiere, which I use.
Video often looks different on the pc monitor during editing as it's not
deigned to be viewed on a monitor, but on a tv, so to test whether you need
to make any colour/brightness/tonal changes you either need a good quality
broadcast monitor to view your edit (way beyond most peoples needs) or you
can edit a small piece, output it back to the camcorder and play this back
through the tv and this will show you what it will end up looking like. 9
times out of ten it will be ok.
Use the link to the forums on the left hand side of the home page at
www.simplydv.co.uk
Hope that helps.

Dr. Indera

graham,

i looked at dvd workshop, but i think it's more than i need. i've only had
the camera for 2 weeks <smile>.

i am headed to the forum you recommended to see how people like video
studio.

yes, each review of studio 9 mentions that it doesn't always run smoothly.
my original thought on that was that my laptop is only 2 months old, so i
guess it's still pretty clean, especially with all of the maintenance that i
do <smile>.

hmmm, it sounds like you are saying that studio 9 is easier to use than
video studio.

i downloaded trial versions of both today and plan to install them over the
weekend and see how far i get - smile.

i didn't know that there was nothing that could be done about how the video
looks on a computer screen.

i have some re-writeable cd's. i think it would be easier to burn a test to
a cd and put the cd in the dvd player, then to hook up the camera every time
i want to test something, which will probably be quite often <smile>. now
that you brought this up, it may be best to put the entire video clip on cd
immediately and watch it, to see which sections may need to have the color
adjusted.

thank you

- i'm off the to forum for video studio.

Workshop will be, I do this professionally :)
Video studio is very good. I shouldn't think you'll need books for either,
they are very easy to get on with, and the help files are quite
comprehensive.
I would start with the trial of video studio, if you like it forget about
pinnacle, as pinnacle is very hard to get rid of properly once installed.
With the testing, you may well find that the video looks fine on the tv via
the cam and then you just need to work on the editing and not bother with
colour correction, this is assuming that it was recorded well in the first
place. If you don't have a tv monitor, you'll soon get used to how it looks
on the pc monitor and how to adjust it, you don't need to keep running back
and forth, just need a bit of experience and it'll come.....
Graham.

hi graham,

i still haven't had time to install the trial of video studio.
i will take you advise and start with this package.

that is scary - pinnacle being hard to get rid of.

well, i doubt that i recorded anything well, as i am still pretty clueless
about the whole process <smile>.

i'll check back in once i have tried video studio.

thank you so much for all of your help.

hi graham,

i still haven't had time to install the trial of video studio.
i will take you advise and start with this package.

that is scary - pinnacle being hard to get rid of.

well, i doubt that i recorded anything well, as i am still pretty clueless
about the whole process <smile>.

i'll check back in once i have tried video studio.

thank you so much for all of your help.

Windows XP MovieMakers2 is perfect for moderate editing of video with
pictures. MM2 is also very intuitive and has several effects plugins
available from its user community (see
microsoft.public.windows32.moviemaker newsgroup). Why not try
something free before spending money on products that might not work
out?

I use Roxio Easy Media Creator 7 which, in fact, does combine the two
applications. You can remove red eye in its PhotoSuite, then import that as a
still image or title background into its VideoWave. It is very easy to use,
and moderately priced at less than $100.
