I am removing ATI Rage 128 viideo card and installing G Force MX 4000 3D
fusion. My question is the ATI card is in the AGP conn slot (brown) The
retention mechanism is totally different than the G Force one. Can you use
an open PCI slot (white) for this?

Don't get any more pure hardware question than this one.

AGP cards won't physically fit a PCI slot.
AGP cards come in hardware versions. The retention mechanism is a sign of
4X or 8X support, but doesn't guarantee it. Motherboard supporting voltage
for 1X or 2X is different than 4X or 8X as well.

AGP cards have to go into AGP slots and PCI cards have to go into PCI slots.

You can't plug your refrigerator into the telephone jack either.. ;-)

No doubt... the slots are in a 99 Gateway and the only difference in the 2 cards and how they fit is the monitor plug. It doesn't fit into the telephone jack either. But, the card (s) fit into either slot and one is marked PCI 1 and the other is marked AGP conn - Thanks for the response though, it is up and running fine since about 4 AM this morning...
