Video capture programs lock up.

I have tried three Video Capture programs and they all lock up at some
stage. I do not have this problem with any other programs on my computer
so i think it must be something common to the video capture technique.
I am using an external Plextor USB ConvertX PX-M402U capture device with
Win XP home. It could be the capture device but the program that came
bundled with the unit is one of the three I have tried and it locks up
like the others.
I would appreciate any suggestions as to how I can trouble shoot this
problem.

With a pci video capture card, all one needs to install are the drivers from
the
mfg,as far as software goes, windows video capture will work w/o a hitch.
Download windows 9 series encoder, codecs, then from encoders home page,
get all the authorting utilities, with all that youre set,xps movie maker
works
well also.I would imagine youre set up works like a pci video capture would.

I appreciate your reply but I'm afraid you are way over my head! I
really need your comments translating into baby language! Perhaps you
could direct me to some sites that will help me understand. having said
that... I have downloaded and installed the updates on the Plextor site
and the bundled software [InterVideo Win DVD Creator] but I am
interested in the comment about the Windows 9 series encoder and codecs.
Can you explain with more detail please.
