Video adapter installation

I have a:
AMD Athlon 1.4 Ghz
Ali chipset
256 megs ddr RAM
40 gig HD (just in case anyone thinks they need to
know this)

I recently installed XP. It is currently using VGASave as
the adapter in display properties. I am trying to install
the drivers for my GeForce 4 mx420. I go to the Video
Controller (VGA Compatible) and click update driver like
the wonderful troubleshooter tells me to. It goes through
the install fine, but then at the end, it says:
"There was a problem installing this hardware:
Video Controller (VGA Compatible)
An error occurred during the installation of the device
Access is denied."

I do not know how to fix or get past this. I am installing
as Administrator so I should have access to everything.
Help would be appreciated.

With the 420 you might find that letting windows update
install the drivers is the best way.Uninstall all first,
even the card in device mgr.,restart computer, then open
update when back to desktop.

I tried uninstalling the card in device manager and
restarting. After autoupdate ran, I got the same error.
Any more help would be greatly appreciated.

Go to this page, download the forceware drivers for xp. run the install
program. It will put a folder on your computer named nvidia. If the install
doesn't work, point windows to this folder.

Neither of those things work. I get to the end of the
installation fine as usual, but then it gives me the error
as like an afterthought.
