When I tried to install vista I got a message to update the following driver:

ATAPI CD-ROM Interface card

I have a sony vgn-a690 laptop and have updated ALL drivers to the latest. I
don't actually have this device in the device manager. I have a sony cd/dvd
rw. I tried loading a generic atapi cd-rom driver but i still get the
error. i've gone to the sony site and updated all drivers with the latest.
but I still get this erro when I try to update my os to vista.

thanks

kevin

Does your optical drive function in spite of the error message? If it does,
report the bug with the Feedback icon on your desktop.

I'm installing from the cd/dvd drive. it reads the vista install dvd fine.
after i enter the id number and it starts to install it gives me the error.
so i never actuLLY GET VISTA installed, thus there is no bug button yet.

What happens if you delete the drive from the Device Manager in XP and then
reboot XP and then try installing Vista from the XP desktop?

It is possible that the drive is not supported in Vista. I have run across
one such drive myself.

If you cannot resolve, you can still report the bug by downloading the
Microsoft Beta Client from
http://windowsbeta.microsoft.com/vista/bugs.aspx?&build=0&sku=0
and running on XP.

For this type of bug it is helpful to include the Device Instance Id from
the Details tab for the device. To access the Details tab, press WinKey +
Pause/Break to open the System Properties page, select the Hardware tab,
click on Device Manager, expand the DVD/CD-Rom drives item, right click on
the drive name and choose properties, and then choose the Details tab.

The text will begin with "IDE\CDROM...." for most systems.

Sounded like that should work. but it didn't. i deinstalled the cd/dvd
driver and still got the same message. I'll file a bug report.
thanks for trying

Not just the driver. Delete the device itself in Device Manager. Then when
you reboot XP it should detect new hardware and install it properly. You
should see the Found New Hardware alerts (balloons) over the Notification
Area in the right side of the taskbar.

Colin,
I too have a SONY laptop (VGN-BX296XP 11 months old). I get the same ATAPI
CD-ROM error message when I try to install Vista Business edition. I have
tried everything I can, updating the driver, deleting the device as below all
to no avail. I've had the install pack since March and I have to say it's
the worst upgrade process from MS ever (I've been a Windows user since
version 3!). I've trawled the net endlessly since, lodged the problem with
Sony and hung on optimistically for a solution one day. It just seems such a
ridiculous error to stop an OS install?

In Device Manager it's displayed as INTEL(R) 82801 FBM Ultra ATA Storage
Controllers - 2653

The Device Instance Id from the details tab is:
PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_2653&SUBSYS_81E8104D&REV_03\3&B1BFB68&0&FA

Any suggestions?
