VIA AC97: mic and boxes want same "port" for the cable

Hi,

I bought a used celeron 2,9Ghz. It works fine. And I was able to use my
headset with the ubuntu live cd.
Now however I installed WinXP and all of a sudden both the microphone
and the boxes work only when I plug them into the left port (of the
typical three). They are not labeled.
Both sound and audio recording works fine, when one plugs the specific
cable into the left port. As I can't plug both into that port, I tried
putting the boxes inthere, and but the mic in one of the other ports.
When using Skype or the audio hardware test, I then get an acoustic
feedback getting louder and louder as soon as a volume treshold is
reached.
Moreover, I can sometimes tape my voice with "audiorecorder" very, very
quitely if I try shouting very loud. But that doesn't work all the time
(on the left port recording volume is fine).

Any suggestions are very appreciated,
thanks,
Jack

When you switched to XP you may have lost some motherboard specific
software. See if you can identify the motherboard and look for their web
site or the system manufactureers web site. On one of mine for instance,
the motherboard normally has
a green for line (sound) out, a blue for line in and a gray fore mic in.
But the configuration also allows me to change to two lines out and mic in
or three lines out from the control panel. Yours may have something
similar.
