vga problems

My DVD want play. I keep getting error message to lower screen resolution or color depth and try again. No matter how low I set these settings it still doesn't work. I also, get a message that there is a problem with the video graphics card. When I try to upgrade the driver the computer tells me there are no new updates. Any recommendations?
