Very slow XP start

My XP Pro takes a long time to boot - almost 2 to 3 minutes. After the
desktop comes up, it seems to take ages to complete the taskbar icons.
Can this be the startup progs taking time to load? How can I tell what
is taking time to load and hopefully eliminate it?

I have been complaining about the same problem with XP
Home. I haven't gotten a working answer yet. I noticed
if the task bar doesn't come up quickly, the computer may
not run right and I have to keep rebooting until I get
a "good (quick)" boot and then all is well. I sure would
love to get a working reply.

Hi!
you may try Bootvis which is a Boot performance trace visualization tool
It provides a graphical view of what processes are doing during boot
and allow you to optimize your boot up.
But note that the Bootvis.exe tool is no longer available from microsoft
site.
you may get it from:-

I've posted about this problem a long time ago. MS denies it is a problem.

Here are some things I discovered:
1. If all the icons don't appear, you may not have administrative
rights even if you are supposed to. This means Windows Update will
malfunction and your antiviral and firewall programs may not load, or
else may not load properly.
2. The only consistent fix is to LOG OFF and LOG ON. [Do not reboot;
this usually does not solve the problem.] One nice thing is that when
you do this, all your icons should now appear.

Good luck,
Michael

It probably is. Some of he background helper programs like antivirus
ones and Zone Alarm, spend quite a time checking round to see all is
well. You can try running MSConfig.exe and selectively uncheck things
to stop them loading, on the Startup page to see if you can locate the
culprit. then decide if it is something that matters

I experimented with the start up using msconfig and that
was not my problem. I am still witing for a solution.

Let me guess, you have a Symantec program like Norton AV
or Systemworks on you computer? I have the same problem,
until I uncheck anything to do with Symantec/Norton
AV/Systemowrks in my startup or services list. Their tech
support is no help either.
