The amount of RAM you have installed is on the low side for WinXP:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/evaluation/sysreqs.asp

It is the minimum recommended amount. If your display adapter does not have
its own built in video RAM, it is borrowing RAM from the system. I have a
P3 866 with 512MB installed that runs quite well, even when I compare it to
my desktop's performance (AMD TB1100, 784MB RAM). If installing more RAM is
not possible, you will want to be especially carefully with what you extras
you are allowing to load at startup.
