Very Slow start with winxp pro

J

Jayc

I have a very slow start from win xppro

I have seen the following in the start up messages.

Wglogon.dll
wlnotify.dll

They are on screen for about 30 seconds. The start sequence is very
slow and my computer is slower than it was when fully booted up than
before these messages appeared.

II have followed net infor to get rid of this sudden annoyance but now
get a message saying group policy scripts. etc which lasts as long as
the .dll process so no advantage gained.

I am aware that the above mentioned DLL's are connected with windows
validation. However I have never seen them before and certainly have
not sufferred such slow start up performance .

I have an OEM winxp installation complete with the correct licence
number as supplied by Evesham when I purchased the maching 4 years
ago.

I do not mind Micrsoft verifying the legality of my installation but
if that is what is slowing my machine down then I object strongly

Rant over, it is probably my fault!!!!!

(I recently tried IE7 but removed it . I think the interface is clumsy
compared to IE6 for my use )

Did you mean to type "wgalogon.dll" or is "wglogon.dll" what you really
see? The first is the .dll associated with Windows validation. The
second is unknown and if that is really what you see, probably malware.

First make sure the computer is really clean by going through these
steps systematically:

If the machine is truly virus/malware-free, do clean-boot
troubleshooting:

Thanks for prompt reply.

Yes you are correct should be wgalogon.dll. Tryping figers taking over
again!!

Further info on what I did is as follows:-

Checked for malware of all types with my antivirus and two other
online antivirus scanners.

Also ran Spybot and the antispyware feature of Zone Alarm.

In addition I have run Windows Defender on a regular basis . All these
with no problems shown except the odd tracking cookie. All were
removed.

I then put the WinXP logon screen into verbose mode .

That is when the 30 second or so boot up delay was shown with the
wgalog.dll file apparently doing the slowing down at boot up.

I fiddled with this as per an article on the web . Wgalogon.dll
disappeared and then wlnotify.dll appeared in its place.

More fiddling and this disappeared to be replaced by "group logon
scripts" notification which also remained visible for the same 30
secs or so.

For once I am totally lost .

I am trying to avoid formating the drive and reloading everything
hence my question.

Will follow your links and let you know how it goes.

You mentioned that this occurrence was sudden. Can you 1) pinpoint what
changed between the time things worked and the time they didn't; and 2)
maybe doing a simple System Restore would be a good next step before
going through the clean-boot troubleshooting.

Other than that, I have these links for WGA troubleshooting from MVP
Carey Frisch - I honestly don't know if the help referenced is just for
false invalid reports or if the "WGA troubleshooting specialist" can
also handle your issue. But here they are just in case:

WGA Diagnostic Tool - http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=56062
http://forums.microsoft.com/Genuine/default.aspx?SiteID=25 Place to post
and "a WGA troubleshooting specialist will analyze the data and
recommend an appropriate solution."

One more WAG - try uninstalling Zone Alarm and see what happens. ZA has
caused a lot of problems in various areas and maybe it is causing your
issues, too. Make sure you uninstall per their instructions:

Malke.

It was ZONE ALARM!!

I uninstalled it . Restarted computer (disconnected modem first and
Startup performance is back to normal.

Not had any probs in the past with Zone Alarm so I will drop them a
line and see what they say.

Meanwhile will use NTL Netguard for firewall .

Very Many thanks I was tearing my hair out and there was not very much
to start with!!

Trend sys clean produced the following:-

2006-10-30, 07:56:33, An error was detected on "C:\System Volume
Information\*.*": Access is denied.

Perhaps that is a result of me fiddling with the two files I
originally mentioned. Will try and restore them to original stautus.

Many thanks and best wishes J

Awesome! I'm so glad you got it sorted and thanks very much for posting
the solution. ZA used to be great, but just from reading the posts in
the MS newsgroups I get the impression that it has caused a lot of
weird problems recently.

Anyway, thanks for taking the time to let me know what it was and that
you're OK now.
