Very Slow Right-click

When I right-click on a file it takes 8-10 seconds to open the menu. If I go
into task manager, application tab the folder that the file is in will show
up twice and say not responding. Then after the 8-10 seconds there is only
one. This
just recently started what could be causing this?

This sounds like not normal behaviour of XP (although simply right-mouse
clicking a file normally has not affect ... should just display things
to do to the file).

Something has caused it. Any recent changes to your system? Any fiddling
around? Confirmed you have no nefarious programs (spy-bots, viruses,
worms, etc.) running?

Yes, this happens to me also... exactly as you say...

I went over to alt.comp.virus and see the beginning of an emerging
problem with the latest NAV update...

Another symptom is very slow starting of MS Word and Excel... if you
have the default configuration of NAV to "enable Office plugin"... if
you have this slow word/excel startup problem, you can uncheck the
"office plugin" option under the miscellaneous tab on the NAV
configuration screen...

You can get to the configuration by right-clicking on the NAV tray
icon... but you might have to wait a while for it to respond.

(I spent all night trying to figure out what was going on...)

Hopefully, this mess will be corrected quickly by Symantec...

The only change was I installed smartftp. I ran ad-aware and spybot and
found nothing. Ran Norton Av and even ran a virus scan from the Symantec
site and found nothing. I ended up doing a system restore before smartftp
was installed and today the computer seems fine.
