File Explorer Very Slow

When I open Window File Explorer it takes a very long time to show the
information in the window pane. If I want to delete something by right
clicking for the pop up menu, it also takes a very long time (like 30
seconds). I am running Windows XP Prof. Any ideas what could cause this?
