Very slow response after clicking on My Computer in Window Explorer

Hi All,

I'm running Windows XP PRO SP2 on a Vaio laptop with 512 Mb. Most actions
are fairly fast but a few are very slow:
- in Windows Explorer I click My Computer. It takes 30 to 60 seconds before
the contents of my computer is shown.
- right-clicking a file and selecting Send To. It takes almost a minute
before windows displays the send to submenu.

Does anyone have any idea on how to speed this up? These delays become very
annoying. I don't want to reinstall windows so hopefully there's a fix.

There's a number of possibilities.

Any error report in Event Viewer? Can you post a copy?

Make an exact note of the precise text of any error message. Minor
discrepancies can
make it harder to search for information about the error message.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Administrative Tools,
Event Viewer.
When researching the meaning of the error, information regarding Event
ID, Source
and Description are important.

HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP

Part of the Description of the error will include a link, which you
should double click
for further information and you can copy using copy and paste.

(Please note the hyperlink above is for illustration purposes only)

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the
error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a button
resembling two
pages. Double click the button and close Event Viewer. Now start your
message
(email) and do a paste into the body of the message. This will paste the
info from the
Event Viewer Error Report complete with links into the message. Make
sure this is
the first paste after exiting from Event Viewer.

In Event Viewer there is no facility to print Error Reports. A
workaround is copy and
paste the Error Report into an email, send it to yourself and print off
the copy in your
Inbox or your Sent Items folder.

Hope this helps.

Judging by the slowness you see when right-clicking files it sounds like
you might have a missing explorer extension. Did you at some point have an
application that added an option to your menu, i.e. winzip. If there was an
application that had this feature and was uninstalled but not correctly it
may be the cause of your slowness. You could try to fix this by cleaning up
your registry.

Found it, I had an old printer still configured. This was a printer on
another computer on my lan. I deleted the printer and now the problem is
gone! Thanks anyway for your time.
