Very slow resart of WIndows XP after SP2 update

I had to re-set up my system this weekend with a clean XP install.
Everything was fine until SP2 was updated. Could be coincidental, but
starting after the SP2 update, my system starts up very slow. I get a black
screen before the Windows XP slash with a gray striped progress bar at the
bottom (nothing else on the screen) every time I restart or boot the system.
Once it gets past this (+/- 3 minutes), Win XP starts up fine. No error
messages or anything. It almost seems like Win XP is trying to repair
something every time I boot. Once through all of this, my system seems to
work normally.

I performed Norton Disk Diagnostics and ran a check disk on both hard
drives. This is the same system and hardware that I have been using for
quite some time (with SP2) prior to re-setting up my system.

Please help,
Thanks.

Can anyone help?

Have you defragged your system drive yet. It is not a pretty site
immediately after a reinstall and application of SP2!

Yes, I have defragged both hard drives and also scanned each drive with
Norton Disk Doctor and run Check Disk.

Any other ideas?

Wait 3 days for the prefetch function to kick in. Then you will see an
improvement.

Must be something else. My system is still starting very slow. It has been
doing this for almost a week now. Here's what it does:

15 seconds - Gateway splash screen
45 seconds - Black Screen
3 minutes - Black Screen with gray progress bar (|||||||||||) across the
very bottom. It fills in progress (doing something) to about 50% across the
screen and then continues with the WIndows splash screen.
1-1/2 minutes - Windows splash screen with normal start up from there.

That's a total of 5-1/2 minutes any time my system reboots! Is there any
way to have the system log activity during this time so that we can see what
it is trying to do?

Please help. This is really frustrating.

Thanks,
Eric
