Very slow on user account

The primary user (administrator) account runs slowly but is tolerable.
However, when switching to a usrer account, the whole thing just about grinds
to a halt. The egg timer stays on for at least 15 mins whilst the desk top
icons contstantly appear and disappear. Trying to open any applications
during this phase, causes thne to freeze (and become impossible to close
through task manager).

I don't understand how the PC can run OK on one side but not on the other
user account

Any ideas as to what is going on, how I can speed things up would be greatly
appreciated.

You didn't tell us anything about your machine so you can't get focused
help. Did things ever work correctly? If yes, what changed between the
time things worked and the time they didn't?

Will try your suggestions. the only thing that happened is that I received a
spoof email & clicked a link in it.

Norton & Spybot are still saying that I am clean though?
