Very Slow Install of XP Pro

I am trying to install XP Pro on a new computer I am building and am having
problems. The setup process goes fine through the stage of formatting the
hard drive, but the next step - copying the files from the XP program disk to
the HDD - is VERY slow. I am now approaching 3 hours and the screen shows
the process is only 51% complete and it seems to be going slower and slower!

What is causing this? My XP Pro is a new copy, just purchased, and I have
run full tests on the HDD and memory, so I know these are fine, and I'm
fairly certain it isn't the LG 4163 DVD/CD drive since I have gotten as far
as I have. Thanks for any advice!

Hi Ham,

Did you do your sums right, meaning Partition, and delete the old Partitions
and Set the Active or primery Partition (C,D,E or whatever)is your CD disk
clean,n't greasy? then format and chose the NTFS.
If you have AV and didn't disable or Uninstall may be can make your
installation difficult, try to revise and plan your steps for installation and
you will find your missing bits.
good luck

Need more system information.
ie. Are you using ATA or SATA?
Are you attemping to run your cd/dvd drive on the same IDE channel?
etc.

I am trying to do the install onto a WD Raptor SATA HDD. The only possibly
strange thing I can report with respect to the disk is that in BIOS it shows
up as IDE Channel 3. Why doesn't it show as SATA?

My DVD/CD drive is installed on IDE Channel 1.

Other system info:
AMD 64 3000+
XFX GeForce 6600
Seasonic 430 watt power supply

It is a new installation, so there were no previous partitions and no AV
installed. The CD is brand new and completely clean.

I believe that you need to install SATA drivers depending on your
motherboard chipset for XP.
You need to press F6 when the XP setup CD prompts you to (very early in
the process along the bottom of the display) -- and let it load the
drivers from floppy or CD.

You should have SATA drivers for your motherboard -- do you??

I am having this exact problem! Anyone have ideas on how to resolve this?
The Install of XP Pro w/ SP2 takes 3 hours for "Setup is copying files" to
reach 51% and then freezes.

My dumbed down rig is:

ASUS A8N SLi Premium
AMD X2 4200+
Corsair 1GB x2 Twinx 2048-3200c2
80GB Hitachi SATAII HDD
x2 250GB Hitachi SATAII HDD in RAID 0
Gigabyte nVidia 6600 GT
NEC DVD burner
Seasonic S12-500 500w PSU

The mobo supplies a nVidia and Silicon Image RAID Controller. During
various attempts I have disabled/enabled one or both controllers in the hope
of getting the install to move along. I have made and used the driver disk
required for the SATA drives use during the XP install. I have also
downloaded and used the latest drivers for the driver diskette with no
success. Both the BIOS and Setup see the standalone drive and RAID array. I
have also used the default setting for the RAM in BIOS as well as the correct
settings.

Basically I feel that I have tried everything and am 95% certain that all of
the hardware is operating correctly.

Please help... thanks =)

Is your O/S intended for the 80GB Hitachi SATAII HDD, or the x2 250GB
Hitachi SATAII HDD in RAID 0?

If the O/S is intended for the 80GB Hitachi SATAII HDD place it on the
SATA 1 connector, place the NEC DVD burner on IDE 0 as Master, remove
the x2 250GB Hitachi SATAII HDD in RAID 0, install the O/S and
re-attach the x2 250GB Hitachi SATAII HDD in RAID 0(one drive to the
SATA 2 the other to SATA_RAID 2).
Leave the BIOS setting "on" for your sata / raid controllers.
Enter the BIOS and change the RAID 0 settings to reflect the 2HD's you
just added.

If the O/S is intended for the x2 250GB Hitachi SATAII HDD in RAID 0,
you are going to need to make sure that the RAID setup is done before
the O/S is installed.
You can download your Manual here:

Thanks for the response. I had tried to install on both the RAID and the
standalone drive. I also had the configuration of the hardware correct. I
finally figured this one out on my own.

While ASUS makes great product, thier support and service leave a lot to be
desired. When I first encountered the problem, I promptly downloaded the
"current" BIOS. I was running 1008 and saw that 1009 and a beta version were
available. I didn't have any intrest in using the beta so I downloaded and
installed 1009. Because of someones neglect, the download DOES NOT contain
the 1009 version but instead has version 1006?!?!?!

SO, I spent two days banging my head on the desk until I gave in and
downloaded the beta version and everything works like a charm.

Thanks again.
