Very slow emailing sending

Like many others, I am experiencing very slow email
operations, especially sending. It takes more than a
minute to send a one-word email. Occasionally, I receive
an error indicating that AOL (Not Responding). Yet my
Toshiba laptop on the same telephone line and ISP zips
emails in and out.

I have a Dell 2400 with XP Professional and AOL 9.0 with
a modem hook-up.

All help would be greatly appreciated. I am really
getting frustrated with this system. Thanks
