Very slow boot up

Daniel

Hi

I have Ultimate

My PC would not boot because of a BSOD, so I ran startup repair twice, this
fixed the problem except that my PC take 2 - 3 hours to restart.

I can start in Safe mode quickly but restarting in normal mode is terible.

Any ideas on how to fix the problem?

Also where would I look in event viewer to see what the problem is?

thanks

Get a Mac.

Why you people STILL put up with Windows is absurd!

Life is too short to waste anymore time with Windows.

Newsgroups are for helping people,
not to promote an agenda.

How do you think your reply is helpful???

AND why are you so paranoid about people using Windows,
is it because you need to ignore the many problems people are
having with Macs??

Instead of wasting peoples time with asinine comments, go to the Mac
groups and help some of the many people having problems there.

My problem has nothing to do with Windows, MS, Vista or anything
other than myself trying out different things for fun, sometimes I get
unlucky and have to find a fix.
I did the same when I had a Mac but had too many problems finding
fixes.

Well, let's see . . .

There are still many more PC users than Mac users, so there's still a larger
selection of software for the PC, so there's that . . .

Also, too many people in these HELP newsgroups assume that because 90% of
the people here are having problems, that must mean that 90% of the people
using Windows are having problems.

Simply not true . . .

I have only very minor issues with my computer(s) and they are usually
related to third party software/hardware being poorly designed and not the
fault of the operating system . . . oh . . . and if you pop over to a Mac
related help forum, if you base your opinion of a Mac on only that forum
you'll believe the same of the Mac that you do of Windows, that it's failing
all the time for most everyone, but of course, it's not.

People come to help forums when they have a problem, how often do you see a
post that's titled, "No problems here, just thought I'd waste bandwidth to
let you know everything is working." ;-)

Get a Mac. Yeah no BSODs in there ........ that's helpful ...... a
bitten apple does not inspire me a lot of trust either. Lots of people
out there with MACs and with also a lot of problems and headaches.
Try a live CD Linux distribution for the fun of it and you might find
out it might be a Hardware related issue, but it's just an advice,
neither the solution. I've read that it might can be cause by an
external peripheral so you can try unplugging them all and reinstall
...... including video (disable aero also to see what happens) and audio
drivers.

What were you doing when you got the screen ?

If it is software related run msconfig and check the Startup Programs
Tab, Disable programs you know that are not System related. Uninstalling
the latest software you have installed recently might also help.

Check also the amount of System Memory the machine uses when started in
normal mode. You might spot something using too much of it and/or the
system taking it all for itself which can slow everything down
considerably. When it finishes starting up ... does it run just fine?

Vista has also a boot log. Never used it myself. Try digging a little
bit into it to see how it works, and see what happens in your machine
during boot to help you identify the problem.

Good luck !!

Turns out it was my USB backup drive, it needed resetting.

All okay now, so much for changing to a Mac!!

thanks again for your advice

Exactly correct, and ALSO

I do not lurk on the Mac forums wasting everyone's time telling
them they should be using Vista

Nor do I, Daniel. :)

I don't see why one would waste his or her time doing such a thing.

Do they not have better things to do?

Is it like some religion to them where they have to "Spread The Word?"

At least with people like the Jehovah's Witnesses they believe they are
saving peoples Souls, these are just computers and operating systems, not
quite the same importance, or am I missing something?

And no, I'm not a religious person and don't advocate knocking on peoples
doors to talk to them about, well, anything, but I can at least understand
why they do what they do.

The "Word of the Computer" zealots I just can't get . . .

Hi,

Try the following.

1) Remove your PC from the network and try to boot. Is it faster? If so,
uninstall the NIC driver and let it reinstall.
2) Get Autoruns from MS and see if there are unknown files that are running
during startup. Remove those.
3) Scan for Virus.

Hope this helps.

Regards,
Kueh.
