Very slow boot in XP

My computer was infected with the SpySheriff malware. It was impossible to
remove, so I reformatted the drive and reloaded Windows XP professional. The
reinstall went smoothly and I then loaded Office. Shortly thereafter, I
could not reboot the computer, (so I thought). Actually, it took about 15
minutes to boot up. The inital splash screen appears immediately, and then
the screen goes black. This usually lasts a few seconds, but it is at this
point that the machine hang for about 15 minutes. Once the machine boots, it
works just great. I am connected to a small office network, (4 machines, one
network printer). Any help would be appreciated.

I didn't do these things. If I reformatted the disk, I found now reason to
defrag it. Also, it doesn't seem to be a hard disk problem

Again " Did you do a clean up/chkdsk/defrag after loading windows and office?"

LOL! Trust me, you need to do it, regardless of what you think. Run the
clean up and get rid of the temporary files (hundreds, if not thousands).
Run the chkdsk. Run the defrag and see how many fragmented files installing
XP and Office creates (use the analize feature in Defrag to see how many
files are fragmented. I would guess over 2000, perhaps over 4000). Then, see
how long it takes to reboot. If course, I would also run my SystemSuite's
Registry Fixer and get rid of all the useless entries in the registry that
installing XP and Office creates but, judging from your post, you are not up
to that. You might also want to look in the Temp folder to see if there is
anything the Clean Up missed.

You should do this after installing or uninstalling any program, especially
large programs such as XP and Office.

Now, if after doing the above, you still have reboot problems, it is
probably hardware.

I used disk cleanup. When I tried to defrag the disk, defrag wouldn't start.
After a minute, I would see defrag in the taskbar. When I open it, it is
just a shell and I have to end the program. Any ideas?

Start up in Safe Mode and try it.

Or maybe the OP forgot to disable his/her Anti Virus auto check before
starting the defrag?
