very slow all of a sudden

In the middle of use today, the system seemed to freeze. I
powered it off and rebooted. XP took forever to come up
(e.g., minutes). Everything runs ten times slower than it
did before. The disk light looks like it is almost always
on. And the disk seems to occasionally make some clunking
noises - like the heads are landing. But everything seems
to work - just very slowly. So, I suspect that the main
disk is going bad. Is there anyway to check that? Does
anyone have a different theory.

THanks for any help.

Most of the hard drive manufacturer's websites have utilities you can
download to test the drive.... but BACKUP anything important NOW!!!!!!

Absolutely! Cari is dead on. You should not be hearing any noises that
could be described as "clunking"! Get your data backed up as soon as
possible. The manufacturer's website will most likely have the necessary
utilities for diagnosing the drive.
