Very loud Epsom 915

A relative has just called with a printing issue. That was
resolved. However, over the 'phone I heard a loud regular
banging noise when printing was in progress - bang bang
bang bang bang bang - as of rotating machinery, or someone
tapping on a kitchen worktop with a small hammer, with
several bangs per second. Apparently this printer has
always made this noise. Is it supposed to? If not, what
the flippin 'eck is causing this, and how to fix it?
