Vertical Yellow Lines - Graphics Card or Monitor?

R

Roger

I have a new Samsung 245BW monitor and a new EVGA e-GeForce 6200 LE
graphics card. On 2 occasions, windows with white backgrounds had
vertical yellow bars evenly spaced about 1/4 inch apart. I can not
reproduce the problem and it only happens every 3rd day or so. On both
occasions the problem appeared after running for awhile, 30 minutes - 2
two hours.

Most of my googling results seem to say this is a problem with the
graphics card. On the first occasion the problem went away after a
reboot and I reinstalled the video drivers. On the second occasion the
problem went away by power cycling the monitor.

The fact that the problem disappeared by power cycling the monitor
suggests I should return the monitor for a replacement. But I am
wondering whether power cycling the monitor could also somehow reset the
graphics card.

I am using the digital interface and Vista Home Premium.

Any opinions?

Odd. I have seen the horizontal yellow lines, and in that case it was
the monitor.

There is only one way to tell....try the monitor on another machine...same problem....safe
to call it the monitor...........

Known to happen when the monitor cannot handle the higher refresh rate
(assuming a CRT type). Lower the refresh to 75 Hz or less and the
problem may disappear.
Good luck.

The HIGH resolution (1920 x 1200) required by that model of monitor, which I
also own, is straining that relatively underpowered video card. I would
recommend upgrading your video card to a newer and more powerful model if
you insist on driving a large 24" LCD monitor.

IME this almost always points to a video RAM fault in the graphics
card, especially if the monitor is a CRT. However, as yours is an LCD
monitor, the problem could be a digital fault within the monitor
itself.

Check the fan on your graphics card.
