i have office 2000. now if i save an excel file as the default, which version of excel will it be. will that file be excel 2000 version? can this file be opened in excel 97 or any other version of excel
please help me asap

Hi smriti!

Excel 97, 2000, 2002 and 2003 all use an xls extension.

Files saved in later versions will open in earlier versions although
there may be some losses of functionality if the later version file
uses some new feature.

Hi Norman-

The extension itself is not conclusive as all Excel versions use XLS. Excel
97 and later all use a file format known as BIFF8. Earlier versions used
other BIFF formats. Generally no version can read a BIFF format later than
itself. But all versions can "save back" to an earlier BIFF version using
the Save As dialogs file type drop down.
