When we save a word file, does the system automatically set a version number
for each saving and how I can look at it. Can I assign versions like v1, v2,
v3 etc.

What version of Word are you using? Word doesn't automatically create
versions unless you tell it to. Assuming you're using one of the versions of
Word that supports version control, choose File - Versions from the menu, to
see what options are available. Note that the Existing Version window shows
Date and Time, who saved it, and andy comments. For me, this info. would be
a lot more useful than version numbers. YMMV.

Note also however, that using Word's version control is akin to putting all
your eggs in one basket, and if any little bit corrupts, it's all gone. The
version feature is also quite complex, meaning there are more opportunities
for it to corrupt.

Personally, I just do a Save As with #1, #2, #3 appended to the same title.
