Verifying properties--HTML Validator

I use FP2003 on a Unix server.

First question:
Sometimes a box will appear when I save a page, saying that
it is verifying the properties. Exactly what is happening
when this occurs? (It doesn't happen every time I save a
page.) Does it fix any problems it finds? What kind of
problems is it looking for?

Second question:
What does an HTML validator do? Does it make any changes to
the web page on its own, or is it supposed to point out
problems?

Thanks!
Steve H

1. All my webs are on UNIX servers and I've never seen that.

2. A html validator points out errors. If you use one, fix one error at a time starting at the top
of the page, then save and revalidate.
Many time fixing one error will fix others.
