Venice or Winchester Core -- how do you tell the difference?

I want to buy an Athlon 64 3200+ with the new Venice core (retail box).
Will the retail box say on the outside which core the cpu has? Or do I
have to trust the salesclerk? I don't want to end up with a cpu with
the Winchester or Newcastle core by mistake.

Your best bet is to purchase it from a reputable on-line retailer who
clearly identifies which one it is.

You can go to the NewEgg.com site and see close up pics of the OEM versions
that reveal the difference.

Where I buy (here in Denmark) they have the codes on the order side
like:

ADA3200BIBOX ... the BI part shows it's a Winchester
ADA3500AWBOX ... the AW part shows it's a Newcastle
ADA3200BPBOX ... the BP part shows it's a Venice

Each has a different price with the BP (Venice) being more expensive
than the others.

My retail box doesn't say what core it is, but IIRC the CPU can be seen
threw the plastic on the back of the box. Look at the last 2 letters on
the first line of letters & numbers on the chip.

Agreed. I'd buy from newegg.com. If you don't, please note the price
differential. You'll pay a US$50-70 premium for the Venice-core
version. Anyone who tells you he'll sell you a "Venice" CPU for the
same price as a "Winchester" probably doesn't know what he's talking
about and is not to be trusted to deliver the CPU you're looking for.
