Various Versions of Windows XP

Hi,

I am buying a new PC which comes with Home Edition of
Windows XP installed. I am intending to install IBM
WebSphere Studio 5.1 which requires Windows XP
Professional. Are Home edition and Professional edition
same? Am I supposed to ask the computer maker to install
anything special to make it Windows XP professional?

Please educate me on various versions of Windows XP and
their distinction. Thanks for the reply.

The only thing that your computer manufacturer can install to make your
computer into XP Pro is XP Pro. If the application in question requires XP
Pro, for some strange reason, then order your computer with XP Pro, not
Home.

With that said, check with IBM as to their requirements. For most purposes
XP Home and Pro are the same. There are differences in Networking and other
aspects, but this should not affect most programs.

No, Windows XP Home and Professional are not the same.
If you require Windows XP Professional to support some product you are
planning on using then you need to ask the supplier to install Windows XP
Professional and not Windows XP Home Edition. Simple.

Pro has additional stuff that cannot be just added to home, you must
buy XP-Pro to get them. Ask them to upgrade to Pro, or buy the Pro
upgrade yourself.

For the differences see

The systems are otherwise identical. Unless the program needs the
'Internet Information Server' facilities, there is no reason why it
should not work on Home - but it rather sounds from the name WebSphere
that this might be a requirement
