Variation on problems running SETUP and maybe other exe's

I've followed several threads on this topic, but none quite match what I'm
experiencing. I cannot run any exe from explorer it seems, if it resembles
setup.exe, even if renamed. if I go into SAFE mode I can do anything I want.
I have disabled my antivirus software briefly with no effect. same for
firewall. I've scanned the registry, but nothing really jumps out at me. I
had recently encountered a trojan, which I was able to remove with little
trouble (TROJ_DLOADER.AEO), but I did not detect any registry problems
associated with this problem. In any case the difficulty started about a
week before the virus turned up.

Any ideas? For the time being I can start in SAFE mode to install new
software, which is infrequent enough, but it is a minor annoyance.

tx,

Phil

The virus apparently performed its nasty deed
and totally corrupted your Windows XP operating system.
You need to perform a "Clean Install".

Thanks for the suggestion, but I'm not convinced it's dead yet. I may
yet do what you suggest, for some residual problems resuting from a
hard drive upgrade six months ago. I'll let you know if I wind up with
a diffeent solution. btw, not all setup programs apparently have a
problem, and the computer otherwise behaves normally.

thanks,

Phil

clean install solved this problem, plus my drive migration issues.
consequently I'm not sure I'd recommend other than a clean install when
migrating from IDE to SATA.

thanks for the advice.
