Validation Error in VS 2003

I'm trying to develop with VS 2003 and get the error: The Web Server
reported the following error when attempting to create or open the web
project located at the following URL: http: yada yada. 'http/1.1 500
internal server error'. I have everything installed on XP including FP
server extensions 2002. Both VS.Net 2003 and IIS are on the same machine.
Any hints as to why I can't create a web project?

Do you have a virtual directory set up in ISS for that web site?

Yes, I'm trying to set it up in the root of the web and all of the FP
Extensions seem to be working fine. Shouldn't VS 2003 not fail on creation
of a project with no further creation of a virtual directory?
