Using XP to record telephone conversations

C

Cast-it Admin

I am sure this must be possible, but not sure how to do it... I want to be
able to record telephone conversations direct to my hard drive.

I have a modem card which says it is full duplex and using XP professional.
I thought if I dialed a number from the phone dialer program and used the
Sound Recorder program I could achieve this, but apparently not.

Any ideas anyone?

Your modem would have to include voice functions and you would have to be
using its in this mode. Not all modems include voice capability and not all
work well If you are using it only as a dialer, it lets go of the line as
soon as it's dialed. It does not monitor the signal so Sound Recorder
won't work.

An easy way to do this is to get a phone adapter from Radio Shack or similar
places (or The SOurce, whatever RS is now called in your area). These
vary in quality but can be had for around $30. You connect the unit to the
mic/line in on your PC. Note that this can be susceptible to hum.

There are also programs like this, but again they require a voice modem:

which you can find by googling "recording telephone calls".

You must, however, check into the laws in your area so that you do not find
yourself committing a felony. In some areas, it's only necessary for one
party to be aware of the recording, in others, all parties must be aware and
consent. It's up to you to check, as wiretapping can be regarded as a
serious crime. In other areas, the recording and storage of personal
information can raise issues under privacy laws.
